How to check an insurer before you buy

  1. Find the insurer named on your policy schedule in the list below or on NAMFISA's register of registered institutions and intermediaries.
  2. Check the agent or broker on the same register: since 1 May 2026, anyone paid to sell or arrange insurance must be registered (FIMA, section 54).
  3. In doubt, call NAMFISA toll-free on 0800 290 500 before you pay (NAMFISA public notice). Companies that lost their registration are on the deregistered list.

Step by step: check an insurer, agent or broker.

Short-term, long-term, medical aid: what the lists mean

  • Short-term insurers sell car, home, business, travel and liability cover. The list includes NASRIA, the insurer of riot, strike and political violence risks (NASRIA).
  • Long-term insurers sell life, disability, funeral, fund, sinking fund and health policies (FIMA, section 4, "long-term policy").
  • Medical aid funds pay members' healthcare costs. They are registered under section 323 of FIMA.

NAMFISA's Annual Report 2025 counted 14 long-term and 14 short-term insurers and 8 active medical aid funds at 31 December 2024 (table 1). The register of October 2026 shows 15 long-term insurers (Namibia Burial Assurance Limited carries a 2025 licence number) and 7 medical aid funds.
