Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
Ghana has two insurance regulators. The National Insurance Commission (NIC) licenses and supervises insurers and intermediaries under the Insurance Act, 2021 (Act 1061): on 31 October 2026 its register listed 14 life insurers, 25 non-life insurers and 3 reinsurers. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) runs the NHIS, which every resident must join (Act 852), and licenses private health insurance schemes. Third-party motor insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on a public road. NHIS membership is renewed every year, by phone on *929#. Complaints go to the insurer first, then to the NIC Complaints Hub.
