Car insurance checklist: 10 things to check before you pay

Short answerChecked 23 September 2026
Print it or keep it on your phone, and go through it with the insurer or broker before you pay. Each point links to the rules for your country below.
  1. The insurer is on the regulator's list of licensed insurers in your country.
  2. You know whether you are buying third-party only, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive — and it is written on the schedule.
  3. Third-party property damage is included, and you know the limit.
  4. Passengers are covered if you carry people for hire (taxi, ride-hailing).
  5. You know the excess on an own-damage claim, and whether an excess protector is offered.
  6. The sum insured matches what it would cost to replace your car today.
  7. You understand how the insurer values the car after a write-off.
  8. The certificate or sticker verifies online (Kenya *352#, Tanzania TIRAMIS, Uganda USSD) the day you receive it.
  9. You know what to do and whom to call after an accident, and the deadline to report it.
  10. You have the claims payment deadline in writing, and you know where to complain if it is not met.
