Business insurance in Botswana

Licensed insurers and workers' compensation

Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
Businesses in Botswana buy cover from the 11 general insurers on NBFIRA's list, through licensed agents or brokers; behind them are 6 licensed reinsurers. One cover is required by law: under the Workers' Compensation Act (Cap. 47:03), section 31, the employer must insure against its liability to compensate workers injured or made ill at work. Export credit is insured by the Export Credit Insurance & Guarantee Company (Botswana).

Workers' compensation: the cover employers must hold

The Workers' Compensation Act makes the employer liable for compensation for death or incapacity (section 11) and requires the employer to insure against that liability (section 31), with a certificate of insurance (section 32) and a duty on the insurer to satisfy a determination against the employer (section 35) (arrangement of sections).

Who insures businesses

General insurers, reinsurers and the full list: insurance companies in Botswana. The general insurers wrote P1,732 million of premium in 2022 (NBFIRA Annual Report 2023, Appendix 4).

Use a licensed broker if you want someone to represent you rather than an insurer: "An Insurance Broker is someone/entity who represents you with your insurance transactions, unlike an insurance agent, who only represents the insurance company" (NBFIRA).
