Home and property insurance in Botswana
Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
Home insurance in Botswana — cover for the building, the contents, or both — is sold by the general insurers licensed by NBFIRA, directly or through licensed agents and brokers. A lender can make buildings cover a condition of a home loan. Before you sign, ask for the summary of the policy, read the exclusions and the excess, and note the grace period for premiums: after it, NBFIRA warns, you are no longer covered.

What to check
- Buildings, contents or both, and the sum insured of each.
- The risks named (fire, storm, burst pipes, theft, accidental damage) and the exclusions.
- The excess you pay on each claim.
- Disclose truthfully: a claim may not be paid on false or incomplete information (NBFIRA).
- Some policies may be cancelled within 30 days of receiving the summary (cooling-off) — ask whether yours can (same page).
If a claim is refused
Complain in writing to the insurer, then to its Principal Officer, then to NBFIRA: how to complain.
