Life insurance in Zambia

Your rights as a policyholder

Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
Life insurance in Zambia is sold by long-term insurers licensed by the PIA: nine on the list for 2026. The Insurance Act No. 38 of 2021 gives you a 30-day right to cancel a new life policy and get the premiums back, less expenses or medical fees the insurer tells you about in writing (section 46). A policy cannot be voided for a wrong answer in the proposal unless it was material and made knowingly (section 40), and a policy taken out for your spouse or children is protected against creditors (sections 35 and 36). The largest life insurer by premiums in 2025 was Prudential (28%).

What the PIA says about life cover

Anyone can buy a life policy; the premium depends on your age, health and occupation, and you can insure the life of someone whose death would cause you financial loss (PIA FAQ). Your premium is set by the insurer and is the same whether or not you buy through an agent or a broker (same page).

Funeral cover is a separate, smaller product: see funeral cover in Zambia.
