Home and property insurance in Tanzania

Home and property insurance in Tanzania

Short answerChecked 23 September 2026
Insuring your own home is optional in Tanzania. Insurance is compulsory for commercial buildings, public markets, imported goods and vessels under section 134 of the Insurance Act. A home policy usually covers the building and its contents against fire, storms and burglary.

What the law says

Section 134(1) of the Insurance Act makes cover compulsory for commercial buildings and public markets. If you let out a building for business use, check with your insurer whether it falls under the rule.

What to compare in a home policy

  • Building vs contents: are both covered, and for how much? Insure the rebuilding cost, not the market price.
  • Perils: fire, lightning, storm, flood, burglary (usually with forced entry only), accidental damage.
  • Items away from home: phones and laptops are often excluded unless added.
  • Excess and any security conditions (grilles, guards).
  • The insurer is on the TIRA register, and claims are paid within 45 days of the discharge (Insurance Act s.131).
