National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Nigeria

NHIA: the National Health Insurance Authority (formerly NHIS)

Short answerChecked 31 October 2026
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) regulates and promotes health insurance in Nigeria under the NHIA Act 2022 (Act No. 17, gazetted on 24 May 2022), which repealed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Act. The Act makes health insurance mandatory for every resident (section 14), lets each state run its own scheme (section 13), licenses HMOs (sections 15–16) and creates a Vulnerable Group Fund for children under five, pregnant women, the aged, people with disabilities and the indigent.
