Before you buy from Prime Insurance in Malawi

  1. Check that the policy is issued by one of the companies above — the licensed entity, not only the brand.
  2. For motor cover, check the insurer, and the broker or agent who sells you the policy, on the Registrar of Financial Institutions' list of licensed institutions published by the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
  3. Ask for the schedule and the exclusions in writing, and compare them with at least one other insurer.
  4. Keep in mind the claim rule that applies to every insurer: the Insurance (Claims Management) Directive, 2014 gives the insurer 5 working days to acknowledge a claim, 7 working days after the documents to present the discharge, and the Registrar may fine it up to 25% of the claim if it does not pay within 14 days of the signed discharge.
  5. If something goes wrong, complain to the insurer in writing, then to the Registrar of Financial Institutions at the Reserve Bank of Malawi (hotline 80 008 444, complaints-handling@rbm.mw).

The rules above come from our guides: check a cover, licensed insurers and how to complain.
